The longer you stay in one place, the greater your chances of disillusionment. Well I don’t know about that but I do know that if you don’t move about a lot you are definitely going to get wet. If you live in the UK that is!

 Seriously though Gartner’s Hype Cycle  http://www.gartner.com/technology/research/hype-cycles/ talks about technology adoption going through a number of phases ( cycles ) ranging from high expectations through to disillusionment and then plateaus of productivity.

 I think Spander’s quote has synergy if you consider a CIO deciding to do nothing about a cloud strategy, and the after effect this decision may cause. Of course one may have reasons and no cash, and if your business appetite is risk averse you may need to stay where you. People worry that cloud is all hype and will be a red herring. Certainly, the trough of disillusionment indicated by Gartner appears to be biting for a number of people. But these people are not you.

 The real acid test comes when you consider that if you stand still for too long ( and this is the hard bit )  you run the risk of demotivating your workforce and IT staff through neglect of systems and infrastructure, but more importantly,  make the effort of moving so difficult, expensive and business risky. Just like standing up after a long train journey or flight. You get aches and pains right?

 Cloud doesn’t need a big bang though. A smart person will watch the industry and make possibly tactical cloud decisions to test the water and to look at opportunities for cloud to make a real difference.
